The Man

Slish Valez

There is a lot written about him. Most of it is by people who were not there. This is the version he approved.

Where he came from

He does not like this part

He came from a town. He will not say which one, because the last time he said which one the town put up a sign, and then a different guy from that town started telling people he was also from there, which he technically was.

Nobody taught him ramp guitar. He would like that written exactly like that. Nobody taught him ramp guitar. A man named Ed showed him a couple of things and Ed has been dining out on it for forty years.

By nineteen he was better at ramp guitar than every person doing it. By twenty he was better than every person who had ever done it. The gap has only gotten worse and he does not consider that his problem.

He does not discuss

  • Technique. If you have to ask, that is the answer.
  • The years he took off. He did not take years off.
  • Ed.
  • What happened in Tulsa. Something happened in Tulsa.

The timeline

Verified where possible

Age ninePicks it up. Immediately good. Family says nothing, which he brings up.
Age nineteenFirst ranked. Enters at number one. The association reviews the rules and then leaves the rules alone.
1998The one arm thing. Curtis Bream was there and has described it four different ways.
2003Turns down an offer to be on television. The offer was for a different show than people say it was.
2011Plays eleven hours and forty minutes. Fire marshal ends it. Slish Valez does not consider that an ending.
NowNumber one. Same as it was. Same as it is going to be.

In his own words

He agreed to two sentences

I do ramp guitar. I do it more than anybody and better than anybody and I have never once needed it explained to me.

Slish Valez

He was asked for a third sentence and he had already left.
